
Use the checklist
below to help ensure that your PLATO® Interactive English lab is correctly set up and ready for
work to begin.
Verify
that all hardware (client and server) meet the minimum specifications.
Install
or update your PLATO®
Interactive English server. If you are updating an existing server skip
to step 2, otherwise start with step 1 below.
1.
Using
the installation guide you received with your server installation kit, install
your server.
2.
Once
you have installed the server, you will need to update it to the newest
version. To do this, go to http://www2.academic.com/resources/onlineresources.htm
and,
under the Server and Client Updates heading, click the link entitled “Server
Update Instructions and Patch.”
If
your lab is already installed with version 8.6 of PLATO® Interactive English, you may choose
to update your workstations to the latest version (9.0) by using a patch
instead of the 9.0 Client Installer CD. To update workstations with a patch, go
to http://www2.academic.com/resources/onlineresources.htm
and, in the Fall 2003 section, click the link entitled “8.6 to 9.0 Client
Update Instructions and Patch”.
If
you are installing workstations with the PLATO® Interactive English client for the first time, or if you
would like to use the PLATO®
Interactive English Client Installer CD to update your workstations,
follow the instructions below:
1.
If you
would like to install the PLATO®
Interactive English client from your server, follow the steps below
a.
Locate
your PLATO® Interactive
English Client Installer version 9.0 CD.
b.
Insert
the CD into your server’s CD-ROM drive.
c.
At the
installer splash screen, click the Other Options button.
d.
At the
Other Options screen, click the Copy Installer button. The new client files
will be copied to the correct location on your server.
e.
When
the copy is complete, remove the CD and follow the instructions in your Server
Installation Guide for installing a client from the server.
2.
If you
are installing the Internet version of the PLATO® Interactive English client, follow
the steps below:
a.
Locate
your PLATO® Interactive
English Client Installer version 9.0 CD.
b.
Insert
the CD into the workstation CD-ROM drive.
c.
Follow
the instructions provided in the Quick Start Instructions section of the CD
insert entitled Interactive English
Client Installer.
If
you have decided to run PLATO®
Interactive English lessons without CDs, you will need to set up one of
the supported configurations to do this. Use the PLATO® Interactive English Content
Installation Guide to assist you in this process. You can find this document at
http://www2.academic.com/AcademicOnline/Common/ie_content.htm.
Before
beginning work, you need to verify that the server, client, and content server
(if applicable) are working correctly together. To do this, use the steps
below.
NOTE: If you need help with any of the
Instructional Support System steps, you can use the Instructional Support
System User’s Guide and Supplements to help you. To see these guides, go to http://www2.academic.com/resources/onlineresources.htm
and
click one of the links under the Instructional Support System heading.
1.
Double-click
the PLATO® Interactive
English icon that appears on the workstation desktop.
2.
At the Interactive English home page, select the
name of your school from the campus list.
3.
On the
home page, in the “Next, are you a Student or Instructor?” line, click Instructor.
4.
Click Course.
5.
If
student licenses have been assigned to your campus, on the Welcome screen, type
partner in the Log-on Name box and partner in the Password box.
Then, click OK.
If
student licenses have not been assigned to your campus, follow these
steps
·
On the
Welcome screen, from the File menu, select Change Campus/Server…
·
In the
Change Campus Server dialog box, type DEFAULT in the “Type your new campus” box. Verify that the
“Type your new server box” displays isstcp.
If “Type your new server” is blank or incorrect, type isstcp.
·
Click OK.
·
On the
Welcome screen, type default in the Log-on Name box and default
in the Password box.
·
Click OK
6.
Create
a course/section and assign a PLATO® Interactive English Curriculum Plan to the
course/section.
7.
Register
a student and enroll the student in the course/section you just created.
8.
Logout
and the login again as the student you just created.
9.
Launch
a lesson.
10.
Click
the Explore button located in the bottom menu bar.
11.
In the
Explore menu, click the Video (it’s the picture of a person holding a
telephone).
12.
Click Start
Video and begin the video by clicking the right facing arrow in the lower
left of the video screen. Verify that the video runs successfully.
13.
When
the video is finished, click Close.
14.
Click
the Focus button. Then, click Ready to Focus.
15.
In the
Focus module, go to a screen that contains a Maya button (it’s the top button
on the right menu bar).
16.
Click
the Maya button. In the Maya window, click each picture and verify that
the audio successfully plays.
17.
Click Close.
18.
Exit
the lesson.
19.
Logout
and login again as a staff member.
20.
Delete
the student and course/section you used for testing.
21.
Logout
and exit the Instructional Support System.
Congratulations! You are now ready to set up your courses
and sections and start working with PLATO® Interactive English.
